We are now a little over a month into a brand new year. Isn’t it amazing how quickly time goes by? I was thinking the other day about this new year and what some of my plans are for it, and it got me thinking about the prototypical New Years Resolution phenomenon. Many, perhaps most people use the start of the new year as something of a reset button on their lives, or at least on elements of their lives, choosing that time to eliminate negative or harmful practices or influences. Most of us do it. I have used that time to change certain aspects of my life on occasion as well. Some decide that it is a good time to start eating better. Others use that point in time to mark a new emphasis on excercise, perhaps joining a gym or taking up running. There are many aspects of all of our lives that we would like to reset. The difficulty is however, that most of our New Years aspirations for change eventually fail. Often, they fail rather quickly. Many of us use that mile marker of the turn of a new year as something of a crutch, believing that if we fail in our resolution, then due to the fact that the newness and initial excitement of the reset is now faded, we tend to lose hope of our ability to change. What do we do in that instance? All too often we give up.
There is something however, that is very important for us to reflect on, which we don’t always want to hear. Change…real change that lasts takes dedication and resolve…thus the word resolution. There is, unfortunately or not, no reset button. The beginning of a new year is certainly a good point of reference to enact some lifestyle changes, but the resolve to change can be initiated at any time of the year. We simply need to make the decision for change, then stand by that decision, realizing that if we fail at some point, we are still resolved to continue the changes we have made. Why not make a decision for a New Direction Resolution today, perhaps to make a change, no matter how small. I know that I am resolving to be dedicated to my resolutions of all types, no matter the time of year.
